A city in Orange County, California voted to prohibit medical marijuana facilities within its limits this week, becoming the latest in a growing list of towns in the county to place a ban.

The Seal Beach city council passed an ordinance Monday night which will effectively ban medical marijuana dispensaries from operating in the city limits.

Although California state law allows marijuana for medical use, Seal Beach becomes the ninth city in Orange County to ban or place moratoriums on marijuana dispensaries.

In September, Laguna Woods became the first and only city in Orange County to pass an ordinance allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the city’s limits, but the law restricts sale only to Laguna Woods residents.

Proposition 215, passed in 1996, allowed for the sale of marijuana to people with a serious medical condition for which medicinal marijuana is deemed effective. Federal law prohibits the possession of marijuana for any reason.

Marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the U.S. according to the National Institutes of Health, which does not recommend the use of marijuana to treat any disease or condition.
