A Southern California city’s planning commission will consider a possible ban on medical marijuana facilities when it meets next week.

Rather than make a decision yesterday, the city council of Desert Hot Springs, California voted 5-0 to send the ordinances, which would restrict medical marijuana sales in the city, to the planning commission for its November 17 meeting, the Desert Sun reports.

The ordinances would prohibit for-profit storefront dispensaries and allow cooperatives or collectives in only light-industrial zone districts. It would also bar facilities from being within 1,000 feet of churches, temples, schools, playgrounds or day care facilities.

Councilman Karl Baker says the new regulations would make it difficult for any facility to exist in the city of Hot Desert Springs, unless an industrial area to its southeast is annexed.

According to the California Department of Public Health, after receiving a reference from their doctor for medicinal marijuana use, patients may apply for an official identification card.

In order to apply for a card, patients must have a serious medical condition for which medicinal marijuana is appropriate which includes AIDS, anorexia, arthritis, and many other chronic or persistent medical conditions.
