Some 800 pounds of marijuana has been seized by US Customs and Border Protection Officers in California, it has been reported.

According to Imperial Valley News, seven seizures were made over a 48-hour period beginning earlier this week, amounting to $340,000 in monetary value.

Eight people were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempts, which saw the narcotics being concealed within cars which came from Mexico.

Five of the accused are US citizens, while the remaining three are Mexican naturals.

In California, the legalization of marijuana is somewhat of a grey area. The state leaves the establishment of any guidelines to local jurisdictions, which can widely vary.

It is legal for medical purposes in some counties, which means that many large-scale marijuana cultivators and traffickers escape state prosecution because of bogus medical marijuana claims.

Prosecutors are often reluctant to charge these individuals because of the state of confusion that exists in California.
