Deputies in the state of California have conducted a series of raids to clear marijuana plants worth an estimated $58.16 million.
According to the Santa Nyez Valley Journal, the officers cleared around 23,000 plants, mostly in the Los Padres National Forest area, as well as seizing 312 pounds of the drug which had already been processed.
The sheriff’s statement also reminded citizens that if they happen upon a marijuana growing operation, they should alert local law enforcement.
Last month, Attorney General Jerry Brown issued a directive designed in part to quell the ongoing friction between the state and federal authorities, which often clash over the issue of medical marijuana in California.
“Hopefully the feds will back off in instances where people are really following these guidelines,” he told the LA Times.
Marijuana is legal for medical purposes in California under state law, although the U.S. federal government does not recognize that legalization.
